S3 is the perfect service to use when backing up objects or files. The service is an inexpensive solution that allows you to store unlimited amounts of data with extremely high durability. On top of that, the S3 service supports life-cycling of data into cheaper tiers automatically, so you can easily migrate your data from the fastest online storage into a cold archive.
There are several ways to integrate S3 as a backup solution. Most notably, S3 is the industry standard for object storage, and most other object storage solutions out there tout compatibility with S3. For this same reason, most backup software providers have developed plug-ins that allow you to store the backups directly to S3 as well. However, there are many other ways to easily copy data to S3.
