Health professionals, such as doctors, nurses, or any organization that values documentation integrity in health information, can benefit by requiring that record keeping be practiced by certified documentarians. AHIMA offers training and a certification exam that is crucial in demonstrating the expertise of each candidate who passes it.
To be eligible for the exam, candidates must meet eligibility requirements, including an associate’s degree or higher or holding an RHIT, CCS-P, or CCS credential. The following are also recommended but not required: Candidates can benefit from having at least two years of clinical documentation integrity experience—the abovementioned degree from a health care or allied health care discipline, and completion of classes the follow these topics: Medical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology, pathology, pharmacology.
Prior to the exam, candidates are encouraged to take AHIMA’s Certified Documentation Integrity Practitioner (CDIP) Preparation Course. This comprehensive course, available online and at the candidate’s pace, covers the same content as the exam. It even includes a practice test at the end, allowing candidates to assess their understanding of the material and prepare effectively for the exam.
The exam is timed so that candidates should complete it within a three hour timeframe. It contains one hundred forty questions. One hundred-six items are scored, and thirty-four are pretest items. Candidates take the test on a computer. The questions range in terms of topics and task candidates to demonstrate their knowledge and skills to a high degree. The questions are randomly disbursed throughout the exam between the pretest and scored questions. Pretest questions do not count towards the candidates’ score, as they are only placed in the exam for data collection purposes. Candidates must accumulate a score of 300 before passing. The AHIMA exam website features the option to download exam content for the practice exam.
